Kentucky Point Series Follows USA Cycling Mountain Bike Rules: Available online

KPS follows USA Cycling Mountain Bike rules for 2017. However, the requirement for a license is not mandatory and is up to the individual race promoter. Verify if a license is required for a particular race when registering for that race.

Racing Age, Start Times, And Lengths
To comply with USA Cycling standards, and for KY Point Series standings, your age at the end of the current calendar year should be given on your entry form.

Mandatory Upgrade Policy


Cat 2 Open Men:
  • KY Point Series will not require Cat 2 Open Men to upgrade to Cat 1 Pro/Elite: If you so choose not to upgrade then this will be your final resting place for the season.
  • KY Point Series will allow former or current Cat 1 men to race Cat 2 Open if they so desire.
  • Cat 2 Open/Current or Former Cat 1 men are not eligible for cash prizes if racing Cat 2 Open.
  • Cat 2 Open participant will race the same distance as Cat 1 Pro/Elite but will be scored separately.

Cat 2 (Sport) Men:
  • KY Point Series requires Cat 2 Men to move to Cat 2 Open if:
  • Rider placed in the top three overall in points the prior season.
  • KY Point Series requires Cat 2 Men to compete in the Cat 2 Open Wave if: Rider won first place series points in his age group the prior season. Exception: a rider placing lower than 10th overall in the series is exempt from this rule.
  • A Cat 2 Men rider who wins top three overall, four times in the current season, must move to Cat 2 Open at the next race.

Cat 3 (Beginner) Men:
KY Point Series requires Cat 3 Men to compete in Cat 2 in the following situations:
  • The rider placed in the top three overall in points the prior season.
  • The rider won first place series points in his age group the prior season. (i.e. all jersey winners). Exception: a rider placing lower than 10th overall in the series is exempt from this rule.
  • Any Cat 3 Men rider who wins top three overall, four times in the current season, must move to Cat 2 at the next race.

Cat 2 and Cat 3 Women:
First overall in the prior year’s point series must move up to the next category.
Note: KY Point Series’ upgrade policy is in addition to USA Cycling upgrading rules. Riders are not required to change their USA Cycling license status for KY Point Series rule upgrades.

Point Transfer Policy: Riders upgrading mid-season will receive points (“Upgrade Points”) in their new category. Upgrade Points are equal to the last finishing rider in that race in the new category. Therefore, it is beneficial to upgrade early if you anticipate a mandatory or voluntary upgrade later in the season.

Series Awards: A rider's best 6 finishes out of the 10 KY Point Series races will be used to calculate a series point total. Points are based on overall place within the category. 1st place receives 200 points, 2nd - 199, etc. A rider must race at least four races to be eligible for series awards.

CATEGORY DESCRIPTIONS

  • INTRO: First time racer
  • SS: Single Speed
  • Cat 3: Casual local competitor
  • Cat 2: Intermediate regional competitor
  • Cat 2 Open: Advanced regional competitor
  • Cat 1 PRO/Elite: Top regional / national competitor.
  • FATBIKE: Tire width more than 3.5" (same distance as Cat 3)
  • CLYDESDALE: Male riders 200 lbs. or more (same distance as Cat 3)
  • AGE 17 & UNDER OPTIONS:
    • Junior Division (boys and girls), 11 - 14 and 15 - 17, 10 & Under - shortest and easiest race with awards and series points.
    • Cat 3 11 - 14 and 15 - 17 Boys & Girls - ranked with adult Cat 3 Men & Women.
    • Cat 2 15 - 17 Boys & Girls - advanced riders, ranked with adult Cat 2 Men & Women.
    • Cat 2 Open 15 - 17 Boys - high-level competitors, ranked with adult Cat 2 Open Men.

Kentucky Point Series Follows USA Cycling Mountain Bike Rules: Available online

For 2018, all riders must present a USA Cycling Mountain license or purchase a one-day permit ($10/event). USA Cycling domestic license is $70 (Juniors $35). New for 2015, your USA Cycling license covers any discipline you race (MTB, road, cyclo-cross, or track) with no add-on license fee. All Category 1 and Pro riders must have an annual license.
